Matte Painting

My first matte painting. It took about two weeks to complete.

  1. I don't understand.. you painted all of this? Like, this entire thing is paint from your paintbrush? If so, this is beyond amazing. If not, can you explain was matte means (or explain anyway).

  3. Matte painting are used in films - majority of films use them as background plates. They are a combination of 3D, painting, and photos composited together to create one high resolution image. I am working on setting up a "card system" for this, which will make it into a moving image - with correct parallax and 3d water (so the water will move).

    So for this one, the big rock mass is a couple of photos, the islands in the back are painted, the lighthouses are 3d, the tree in the front is photo,the sky is painted, 75% of the water is painted the rest is digital. As you can see you use multiple techniques to achieve the desired look. Every method involves a lot of work.

    Thank you for the comments. I am a 3d artist and am trained to make things look photo real. I can paint well, but not to that extent. Its a lot of techniques and understanding light that make these work.

  5. I go to school at Full Sail University but I self taught myself matte painting.
